- thermal updraft
- A rising air current in a large thunderstorm that is buoyant because its temperature is warm compared with the surrounding air. “Thermals” are not always associated with thunderstorms; they are useful to soaring pilots and hang gliders, as the rising air currents are responsible for keeping the planes and gliders aloft.
